Did You Know..........

By land, by sea, and by air - How the star was born.

Gottlieb Daimler was the technical director of the Deutz gas engine factory from 1872 until 1881.  At the beginning of his employment there, he marked a star above his own house on a picture postcard of Cologne and Deutz, and wrote to his wife that this star would one day shine over his own factory to symbolize prosperity. In 1909, the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) board accepted the proposal to use a star as its brand mark. In June of the same year, both a three-pointed and a four-pointed star were registered as trademarks. Although both designs were legally protected, only the three-pointed star was used. From 1910 onward, a three-dimensional star adorned the radiator at the front of the car.

Over the years, small additions were made to the emblem. In 1916, the tips were surrounded by a circle, in which four small stars and the word Mercedes were integrated, or alternatively the names of the DMG plants at Untertürkheim or Berlin-Marienfelde.

In November 1921, DMG applied for legal protection of utility patents for new variations on their trademark, and lodged with the patent office, a three-dimensional three-pointed star enclosed in a circle ? which included the design intended for use on the radiator grille. This symbol became a registered trademark in August 1923.

In June 1926, DMG and Benz & Cie merged to form Daimler-Benz AG. At this point a new trademark was designed, which brought together the main characteristics of both the existing emblems ? the world-renowned three pointed star belonging to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was surrounded with its trade name 'Mercedes' as well as that of the equally famous name 'Benz', whose laurel wreath entwined the two names together.

This trademark, which has changed little over the decades, still adorns Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and has come to represent quality and unmatched safety on roads everywhere. Throughout the world, the name 'Mercedes-Benz' is synonymous with tradition, innovation and the future of the automobile.

How the Silver Arrow got its name.

The Silver Arrow got its name from a predicament the Mercedes race team was in before their first race. Doing everything possible to ensure the vehicle was under the weight limit the only thing left they had to do was peel the paint off. Which is exactly what they did. The bare aluminium shown like silver and they made it under the 750kg weight restriction.

Mercedes cars are named after an Austrian girl.

In 1897, Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek, traveled from his home in Nice, France to purchase a car from the Daimler factory in Cannstatt, Germany. On his return to the French Riviera, his sporting Daimler Phoenix caused such a sensation that he decided to enter it into a local touring competition, under the name of "Mercedes" after his favorite 9 year old daughter. Realizing the business potential for the new car, he not only placed an order for 36 more, but also secured the franchise for selling them in several countries. Gottlieb Daimler also agreed to having them sold under the name of "Mercedes."

The Story of Bib; the Michelin Mascot

Bib is short for Bibendum. When inflatable tires were first introduced, punctures were a regular hazard. Michelin invented the steel belted radial and they were considered to be much more puncture resistant.

Bibendum means "To Drink". Therefore, there motto for Michelin tires was based upon there ability to "drink" obstacles on the road.
